Brownfields Redevelopment Agency

About

The East Hampton Brownfields Redevelopment Agency is a seven member volunteer agency tasked with facilitating the redevelopment of the Village Center area through the identification, assessment and remediation of soil and groundwater contamination. Its members represent a cross-section of environmental professionals and engineers, legal and financial experts, and business owners.

Originally established as the East Hampton Brownfield Revitalization Steering Committee in November 2003, the town created the East Hampton Redevelopment Agency by Town Ordinance (Chapter 120) and State Statute (CGS §8-126) in April 2007. In 2009 the Redevelopment Agency was merged with the Brownfields Committee and the new name of the Agency became the “East Hampton Brownfields Redevelopment Agency” (EHBRDA).

The EHRBA is at its core a planning agency. It seeks to compliment the efforts of East Hampton’s Economic Development Commission, Planning & Zoning Commission and other land use boards to provide residents and business owners with a comprehensive vision for redevelopment. Additionally, the EHBRA will provide the leadership and expertise to implement specific initiatives to assess and remediate contaminated properties.

The EHBRDA has achieved significant and measurable success in assessing and cleaning up contaminated properties. There are several Brownfields site, in various stages of investigation and remediation, targeted for redevelopment that this agency is working on. One such property was remediated and redeveloped through a grant administered by the Agency, and is now used as a municipal parking lot located adjacent to the Town Library and Senior Center. Prior to 2022, the Agency, acting on behalf of the Town, has received five EPA grant awards and one State of Connecticut STEAP grant totaling $1,475,000.
