Hebron Well Water Contamination Update
In response to recent news items presented in local newspapers and on television stations, the Chatham Health District would like to give an update on the well water testing in the center of Hebron.
In 2001, all residences/businesses within 500 feet of the Citgo station were sent letters requesting permission to have their well water tested for volatile organic compounds. During this testing one well tested positive for benzene. Results of quarterly testing indicated the benzene levels were slowly increasing and exceeded the limits for drinking water standards. The affected building uses bottled water and remains on a quarterly water test schedule.
In early 2004, it was determined that a new 500 feet radius around the Mobil station, located at the intersection of Rt 66/316 be tested for VOC's. As of today, one additional well has tested positive for the presence of benzene. Although the level is below the action level, as a precautionary measure, the business is being supplied with bottled water. Another well tested positive for MTBE at levels exceeding the State of Connecticut's action level and they too will be supplied with bottled water.
Letters requesting testing of well water have been sent by Lenard Engineering, located in Mansfield, CT. Follow up letters will be sent by the Chatham Health District to those properties that have not yet given permission to have their well water tested. There is a map located at the Horton House in Hebron which shows the affected area. This map is available to interested parties during normal Town Hall hours. For additional information you may contact Steven Knauf of the Chatham Health District at 228-5971 ext 140.
