Mission Statement

Town Council Office

East Hampton's legislative body is the elected Town Council. The Council consists of seven (7) resident electors of the community who serve without compensation for a two (2) year term.

At their Organizational Meeting following their election, members of the Town Council select one of themselves as Chairman and another as Vice Chairman of the Council, to serve for the duration of their two (2) year term.

The Council is responsible for the adoption of local laws known as Ordinances, final recommendation of the annual budget, adoption of resolutions, procedures and policies governing the operations of the Town, appointing various boards and commissions that carry out a multitude of municipal functions and services, as well as hiring a professional, chief executive officer (Town Manager) to serve as their chief of staff and to oversee the day to day operations of the Town.

The Council conducts at least two (2) regular meetings a month and special meetings as necessary to administer the ongoing governance of the Town.

The East Hampton Town Charter follows the Council/Manager form of government that is prevalent in over 3,000 municipalities of various sizes throughout the United States. The Council/Manager form of government was conceived as an American innovation to provide strong representative local government supported by a professionally trained staff.

The Council staff maintains an office on their behalf at the Town Hall supported by the Town Manager and their Administrative Secretary. Questions regarding Council meetings and other pertinent information may be directed to the Council staff at 860-267-4468.
