Chairman's Introduction

Town of East Hampton - Lake Pocotopaug Commission Meeting

Eaton E. Smith Meeting Room - Town Hall

October 19, 2006 7 p.m.

Welcome to the first regular meeting of your new lake commission. To put it very plainly, we are here to help our fellow residents improve the water quality of Lake Pocotopaug. We, on the lake commission, do not expect to do this on our own. This must be a community effort with community participation and cooperation. It is a long-term effort. Do not expect a crystal clear lake next year or the year after. The problems of the lake have accumulated over decades of neglect in the face of watershed development while improvement efforts have resulted mainly in studies and complex reports and recommendations instead of water quality improvement.

That is not to say we have been standing still. Our town and its boards, commissions and agencies along with builders and developers have been grappling with these problems for a long time now and much progress is being made in guiding watershed development to minimize lake impact. But more needs doing.

Now with a permanent commission consisting of interested, talented, and motivated town residents, along with help from the town council, other town commissions, boards, agencies, employees, and with the cooperation and help of the community, local organizations, and businesses, we will take the next steps toward sustained efforts to improve and maintain the lake. We must implement solutions that are practical, effective, acceptable, and at reasonable cost.

So again, on behalf of the Lake Pocotopaug Commission, I extend a welcome…welcome to the community; welcome to town officials; welcome to property owners; welcome to builders and developers; welcome to town and regional businesses; welcome to all who together can both affect and are affected by, the lake
